Lucy Mae Toney was born on November 14, 1923 to the late Charles Strong and Charlotte James in Eudora, Arkansas. She passed away on April 6, 2019 at he home in Eudora, Arkansas.
She received her formal education at James Chapel A.M.E. Church. She accepted Jesus Christ as her savior at an early age and united with the Midway Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Brown.
She later united with Bright Morning Star Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend J. J. Jackson. She remained faithful for over 70 years where she served on the Mother's Board until her health failed. Under the leadership of her son Reverend David. L. Toney, Mother Toney was very instrumental in raising funds for the construction of the new sanctuary.
"Miss Lucy Mae", as she was affectionately known, was united in holy matrimony on December 4, 1940 to the late Reverend James W. Toney. To this union, thirteen children were born, three daughters and ten sons. Preceding her in death were one daughter Fannie Lee Toney and three sons: McArther Toney, Benjamin Toney and Willie Earl Toney. One brother Levi Benner also preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Pearlie Evans and Collette Toney; seven sons: James (Diane) Toney, J.D. Toney, Robert (Carolyn) Toney, Kenneth (Clara) Toney, Rev. David (Dorethea) Toney, Joe Nathan (Yolanda) Toney, and Darrell (Cassandra) Toney; one sister Willie Mae Hatten of Kansas City, MO; 38 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, 37 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 20, 2019, at 11:00 AM at the Ministers Institute in Eudora, AR with Reverend David L. Toney officiating. Burial was in the Masons Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Robert R. Keith, John F. Keith, Wayne Williams, Lemar Keith, Curtis A. Keith, and Jarrod D. Toney. Honorary pallbearers were James W. Toney, J. D. Toney, Robert L. Toney, Darrell D. Toney, Kenneth R. Toney, David L. Toney and Joe Nathan Toney
